Caption: Amoeba proteus. Light micrograph of the single celled protozoan Amoeba proteus. The protozoan (at upper right) has numerous blunt protuberances around it known as pseudopodia (or false feet). The pseudopodia are seen extending to move. The body of the cell consists of a naked mass of protoplasm. The amoeba extends a pseudopod in the direction it "wishes" to go, anchors it and pulls itself forward by contracting it's cell body. Movement can be to engulf food which is stored within the cell as a vacuole. Magnification x85 at 35mm size.
