Caption: Amoeba. Coloured computer enhanced light micrograph (LM) of an amoeba, Entamoeba histolytica, the cause of amoebic dysentery. A circular nucleus can be seen on the left side of the light blue amoeba. This single-celled organism (protozoa), has an extremely flexible protoplasm allowing it to move by flowing from point to point. In a similar way it can capture and engulf food through the formation of projections called pseudopodia, caused by changes in shape of the protoplasm. Amoebic dysentery is a severe infection of the intestines, causing diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Magnification unknown.
