Caption: Amoeba feeding. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of one Amoeba proteus predating another. Several pseudopodia (false feet) of the attacking Amoeba (green) can be seen moving around the prey (pink) ready to engulf it by phagocytosis. Pseudopodia are irregular extensions of the cell cytoplasm, used both in locomotion and feeding. Once engulfed the prey will be digested by enzymes inside a food vacuole. Amoeba are single-celled organisms (protozoa) which live in freshwater. Magnification: x96 at 5x7cm size. Magnification; x230 at 4.5x6.5" size.
