Caption: Amoeba protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an Amoeba proteus single- celled (protozoan) creature. The amoeba has numerous, blunt pseudopodia (false feet) projecting from its body. Its body consists of a naked mass of protoplasm. In order to move, the amoeba extends a pseudopodium in the direction that it wishes to go, anchors it and pulls itself forward by contracting its cell body. The pseudopodia can also engulf food; this food is stored and digested within cavities (vacuoles) inside the cell. Magnification: x300 at 6x7cm size.
