Caption: Amoeba. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the protozoan, Amoeba proteus. Several pseudopodia are seen extending from the amoeba's body. These are used for movement and gathering food. To move, the amoeba extends a pseudopod, anchors it, and moves the rest of its body towards it. When feeding, the pseudopodia are used to surround the amoeba's prey, which is then engulfed into the body of the cell. Amoeba proteus is common in slow or still freshwater, and feeds mainly on smaller protozoans and bacteria. Magnification: x300 at 6x7cm size.
