Caption: Foraminiferan shell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of both sides of the shell of the foraminiferan Globorotalia menardii. This single- celled animal, a relative of the amoeba, is found in marine environments. It inhabits a calcareous shell to which new chambers are added as it grows. G. menardii is a tropical foraminiferan that lives in cool upwelling waters near the edge of ocean basins. Magnification: x460 when printed 10cm wide.
