Caption: Amoeba. Normarski image of the large protozoan amoeba, Amoeba proteus. A. proteus is commonly found on the bottom of pools and puddles, and measures 0.2-0.5 millimetres in diameter. Amoebae are unicellular animals. A. proteus is recognised by the numerous pseudopodia (false feet) with which it moves and captures food. The clear circle (top left) is a contractile vacuole that collects excess water from the amoeba and discharges it outside the body. The circular nucleus, which contains the amoeba's genetic information, can just be seen (left of centre).
