Caption: Amoeba. Interference contrast light micrograph of the large protozoan amoeba, Amoeba proteus. An amoeba is a unicellular animal. A. proteus is commonly found on the bottom of pools and puddles, and measures 0.2-0.5 millimetres in diameter. It has numerous pseudopodia (or false feet, the extensions seen here) with which it moves and captures food. The nucleus (black, circular), contains the amoeba's genetic information, and is at lower centre. Magnification: x125 when printed 10cm wide.
