Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a membrane-bound clump of Plasmodium merozoites, the infective stage of the protozoan parasite which causes malaria. Each merozoite enters a human red blood cell, it then reproduces by asexual division (schizogony). A new batch is released to infect other red blood cells. The synchronised release of merozoites throughout the body results in bouts of shivering, fever and sweating characteristics of the disease. The sexual phase of the Plasmodium life cycle takes place within the stomach and digestive glands of the malaria mosquito, Anopheles sp.. Magnification: x15,000 at 6x4.5cm.
