Caption: Cryptosporidium. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing two stages in the life-cycle of the parasitic sporozoan (protozoan) Cryptosporidium parvum. Rounded oocysts are seen, which contain the infective sporozoite stage (some seen at top left). This parasite causes severe diarrhoea in humans, a condition otherwise known as crypto- sporidiosis. It can be spread from person to person or from domestic animals to people. The main symptom is an attack of watery diarrhoea lasting about a week; fever, nausea and abdominal pain may occur. The infection is more severe in immune suppressed patients, and is common in AIDS patients. Magnification: x4,000 at 7x8 inch size.
