Caption: Toxoplasma gondii. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of several cells of the protozoan (single-celled) parasite Toxoplasma gondii, the cause of human toxoplasmosis. Infection with this organism is extremely common worldwide. The parasite is transmitted via the faeces of domestic cats and through undercooked lamb and pork. Most cases pass without symptoms, but toxoplasmosis can be dangerous to pregnant women or people with an impaired immune system, such as those with AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Infection of the developing foetus can cause stillbirth and congenital deformities, including blindness & men- tal handicap. Magnification x3,500 at 35mm size.
