Caption: Cryptosporidium. Light micrograph of a human stool sample showing a stage in the life-cycle of the parasitic protozoan Cryptosporidium parvum. Rounded oocysts (pink) are seen, which contain the infective sporozoite stage. This parasite causes severe diarrhoea in humans, a condition known as cryptosporidiosis. It can be spread from person to person or from domestic animals to people. The diarrhoea typically lasts for around a week, and other symptoms include fever, nausea and abdominal pain. The infection is more severe in immune suppressed patients, and is common in patients suffering from AIDS. Brightfield illumination. Magnification: x1000 at 35mm size.
