Caption: Cryptosporidium protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Cryptosporidium parvum protozoan oocyst (green) with unidentified bacteria (rod-shaped). This parasite causes cryptosporidiosis when ingested by humans. The symptoms of this disease include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and a slight fever. The oocyst releases an infective sporozoite stage (not seen), which attaches to the lining of the intestinal wall. There is no effective cure, but fluid intake relieves dehydration. In immuno-compromised individuals, such as those suffering from AIDS, the disease can be severe or even fatal. Magnification unknown.
