Caption: Cryptosporidium protozoans. Artwork of the surface of an intestine with several Cryptosporidium sp. protozoan oocysts (round). These are an egg-like stage of this microscopic organism. They release the infective stage (sporozoites, worm-like, some seen hatching). These attach to the intestinal lining, seen here as many 'fingers' (microvilli). This parasite causes cryptosporidiosis when ingested by humans. The symptoms of this disease include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and a fever. There is no effective cure, but fluid intake will relieve dehydration. In immuno-compromised people, such as those suffering from AIDS, the disease can be severe or even fatal.
