Caption: Sponge. Purple tube sponge (Aplysina lacunosa). Sponges are primitive animals which filter water through their bodies, extracting plankton for nutrition. All their cells are able to perform any of the functions required in the animal. It is possible to pass a sponge through a fine mesh gauze so it has completely disintegrated, and the entire animal will reform over time. Photographed off Bonaire Island in the Netherlands Antilles.
