Caption: Sponge spicules. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of spicules from the sponge Tethya minuta. Sponges are aquatic organisms which filter food from the water. They are a loose aggregation of cells supported by spicules, needles of siliceous or calcareous minerals. Tethya sp. sponges are supported by siliceous spicules along with fibres of the protein spongin. Magnification: x8000 at 6x6cm size.
