Caption: Tube sponges (Callyspongia vaginalis). Sponges are primitive animals with a simple cellular organization. They filter the water for food (plankton, bacteria), passing it through a network of body pores. The tube sponge then ejects filtered water through the large openings at the end of its tubes. It inhabits the Atlantic coast of North America, from Florida, USA, to Mexico.
