Caption: Sponge (Crambe crambe). This orange sponge forms an encrusting layer on rocks and other structures. It favours shaded areas such as inside caves and under ledges. It filters tiny organisms from the water. Sponges generally have little or no differentiation between their component cells, and are amongst the most primitive multicellular animals. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea.
