Caption: Yellow sponge (Clathrina clathrus). A sponge is a primitive animal whose body contains no muscle or nerve cells. C. clathrus is formed of yellow tubes and reaches a maximum diameter of 12 centimetres. It is found at depths of between 5 and 25 metres, especially beneath rocky overhangs where it forms soft masses on the wall. Photographed in Port-Cros National Park off the coast of the French island of Lavant in the north- western Mediterranean Sea.
