Caption: Sponge spicule. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a spicule from a sponge. Sponges are primitive aquatic organisms that filter food from the water. They are a loose aggregation of cells supported by spicules and needles composed of silica. This is a euaster form, where all extensions radiate outward from a central region (as opposed to having a branched structure).
