Caption: Fluid mixing. Second of four images of swirls of dye revolving around a square container, showing how the fluid mixes as a vortex slows down (decays). The red dye in the vortex interior forms a distinct swirl, showing that there is little mixing there. The green swirls around the outside, particularly in the corners, have been stretched and folded, showing that mixing is occurring. This mixing is created by turbulence caused by the interference of the fluid flow by the walls of the container. This turbulence is chaotic, meaning that the exact way that it will affect the fluid flow cannot be determined before- hand. (See also A350/102, A350/104 & A350/105).
