Caption: Jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica) near the water's surface. This jellyfish originated in the Indo- Pacific region, but is now found in huge shoals in the eastern Mediterranean, having migrated through the Suez canal. It has a powerful sting which is painful, but not fatal, to humans. The umbrella (right) is a common food in the Far East. It is preserved in salt and softened in water before being eaten.
