Caption: Ephyra stage of an Aurelia jellyfish, light micrograph. This ephyra is a life stage of the common jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). The ephyra has eight arms, the tips of which are called lappets. In the central dark mass of the disc is the mouth. Around the mouth area is the stomach from which canals extend into the arms (interradial canals). The ephyra originates from a fertilised egg in the adult Aurelia. The egg develops into a planula larva that buds off ephyra medusa like the one seen here. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
