Caption: Coral reef. Corals are tiny colonial organisms that build tough structures around themselves for protection and support. At left is a sea fan, or gorgonian. This is a type of coral that forms a flat shape aligned against the prevailing current, allowing it to expose the largest number of its filter-feeding polyps to the nutrient-rich current. Photographed in New Caledonia, in the south Pacific Ocean.
