Caption: Sea fan (Paramuricea clavata). Close-up of the arms of a sea fan or gorgonian. This is a type of soft coral, a colony of tiny organisms (polyps, ending in a set of tentacles) that build a tough structure around themselves for protection and support. The colony forms a flat structure that is orientated at right angles to the prevailing current. This allows the polyps to filter plankton from the water with their tentacles. Photographed off Levant Island, France, in the north-western Mediterranean Sea.
