Caption: Coral reef. School of sea goldies (Pseudanthias squamipinnis) swimming around a coral reef. At centre left is a coral cod (Cephalopholis miniata). Coral reefs are diverse and productive ecosystems, providing shelter, food and breeding grounds for many species of marine life. They are found in warm waters at depths of no more than 60 metres. The reefs are built by a combination of the hard corals secreting a layer of calcium carbonate, and the accumulation of coral and other skeletons. Sea goldies live and breed around corals. They are a sexually dimorphic species, with the females being orange and the males purple. Photographed in the Red Sea, Egypt.
