Caption: Deep water sea fan (Iciligorgia schrammi). This sea fan is usually found below 20 metres. A sea fan is a colony of coral-like organisms that secrete a tough substance around themselves for protection and support. The face of the fan is orientated at right angles to the prevailing current so as to present the greatest surface area to it. The tiny coral organisms (not seen) filter food particles from the water. Photographed off Conception Island in the Bahamas, in the Caribbean Sea.
