Caption: Deep water sea fan (Iciligorgia schrammi) on a reef wall. This sea fan is usually found at depths below 20 metres. The fan is a colony of coral-like organisms that secrete a tough rocky substance around themselves for protection and support. The face of the fan is orientated at right angles to the prevailing current, presenting the greatest surface area to the water flow. This aids the tiny coral organisms, which feed by filtering plankton from the water. Photographed off Conception Island in the Bahamas, in the Caribbean Sea.
