Caption: Coral reef reflected on the sea surface. This reef contains Acropora sp. and Madrepora sp. corals. The corals grow close to the surface to ensure that they receive the maximum amount of sunlight possible. The coral animals themselves filter food particles from the water for nutrients. However, symbiotic algae live within the corals' tissues. These are responsible for the bright colours of the corals, and they use the sunlight to produce nutrients for the corals through photosynthesis. Photographed at Tetamanu at the Fakarava Atoll in French Polynesia, in the Pacific Ocean.
