Caption: Gorgonian sea fans (Subergorgia mollis). Sea fans are colonies of tiny coral organisms (polyps), which build rocky structures around themselves for protection and support. Fans are orientated to present large surface areas to the prevailing current, allowing the coral organisms to filter plankton from the water. Photographed at Vava'u, Tonga.
