Caption: Sheep tapeworm (Moniezia expansa) in a laboratory. This parasite, which lives in the intestines of sheep, can reach up to six metres in length. Its proteins are being studied to find out how it can survive for so long in the hostile environment of its host's digestive system. The study of the structure and function of all an organism's proteins (its proteome) is called proteomics. Proteins form nearly all the functional structures in an organism, and research can shed light on every aspect of its life. Research into the proteome of the sheep tapeworm may lead to new ways to combat it. This research is being done at Aberystwyth University, Wales.
