Caption: Light micrograph of the head of an unidentified freshwater rotifer (class Rotatoria). Rotifers are divided into head, trunk & foot. The foot in some species has degenerated, in other species it serves to anchor the organism on a substrate. The head suppports a ciliated organ (visible here), surrounding the mouth. The motion of the cilia creates a current in the water, which draws food, such as the decaying remains of plants & animals, into the mouth. Two red eye spots are visible. The rotifer is here accompanied by an unicellular green algae. Magnification: X160 (at 35mm size).
