Caption: Light micrograph of the 1st larval stage of the dog roundworm Toxocara canis, the cause of toxocariasis in man. Toxocariasis is a parasitic infestation caused by oral contact with material contaminated by eggs deposited in dog faeces. The larvae migrate around the body destroying various tissues; the liver may enlarge & the lungs inflame. Symptoms include fever, joint & muscle pains, vomiting & convulsions; larvae may lodge in the retina of the eye, causing inflammation & granuloma. Widely distributed throughout the world & primarily affecting children, there is no satisfactory treatment for the disease. Magnification:x128 at 35mm , x237 at 5x7cm size.
