Caption: Light micrograph of the first larval stage of the dog roundworm Toxocara canis, the cause of toxocariasis in man. The disease is passed on through contact with contaminated material, principally infected dog faeces. The larvae migrate around the body destroying various tissues; the liver may enlarge & the lungs become inflamed. Symptoms include fever, joint & muscle pains, vomiting & convulsions. Larvae may lodge in the retina of the eye, causing inflammation & granuloma. Widely distributed throughout the world & primarily affecting children, there is no satisfactory treatment for the disease. Magnification: x128 at 35mm size.
