Caption: Light micrograph of two specimens of the dog roundworm Toxocara canis, in their second larval stage. They cause toxocariasis in man, a parasitic infestation due to oral contact with material contaminated by eggs deposited in dog faeces. The larvae migrate around the body destroying various tissues; the liver may become enlarged and the lungs inflamed. Symptoms include fever, joint and muscle pains, vomiting and convulsions; larvae may lodge in the retina of the eye, causing inflammation and granuloma. Widely distributed throughout the world and primarily affecting children, there is no satisfactory treatment for the disease. Magnification: x130 at 35mm size.
