Caption: Light micrograph of an adult Caenorhabditis elegans, a soil-dwelling bisexual nematode worm that feeds on bacteria. Visible within the worm are a number of larvae at the 'pretzel stage' of development. A tendency to reproduce by self- fertilization (resulting in identical offspring), along with the short time taken to reach maturity, make this simple multicellulate an ideal subject for genetic research. A plan is currently underway to decode the genetic blueprint of C. elegans, to discover every one of the 100,000,000 letters, or bases, which make up its genome. Phase contrast illumination. Magnification: x128 at 35mm size.
