Caption: Marine nematode. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a marine nematode (roundworm), order Desmoscolecida. This animal lives amongst the grains of sand on coastal beaches. Its body is covered with spines which protect it from abrasion by the sand and enable it to wedge itself securely between the sandy particles. This prevents it from being washed away by incoming and outgoing tides. Free-living nematodes such as this feed mainly on solids such as small organisms. Nematodes are abundant and widely distributed; they are found in deserts, oceans, rivers, forests, mountains, ice and hot springs, and as parasites of plants and animals. Magnification: x970 at 6x6cm size. x1500 at 4x5"
