Caption: Hookworm & anaemia. Artwork of hookworm (Necator americanus) infestation causing anaemia. Brown worms are seen "digging" into the intestinal wall where they suck the victim's blood. A circle (at upper centre) illustrates the anaemia affecting the blood of the patient as a result of heavy infestation. The blood cells are reduced in number and noticeably pink (rather than red) due to an iron deficiency. Heavy infestations of hundreds of worms can cause enough blood loss to kill the victim. Hookworm larvae enter the host through the skin. After migrating through the bloodstream to the lungs they are coughed up, swallowed, and infect the small intestine.
