Caption: Threadworm in intestine. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a threadworm (Trichostrongylus vitrinus) in the small intestine of a sheep. Threadworms (also known as roundworms) belong to the phylum Nematoda, which contains many different species of parasitic and free- living worms. T. vitrinus is an important parasite of sheep. Here, a threadworm is burrowing through and damaging the gut wall. Part of its cylindrical body is visible. The body is covered with a thick, tough cuticle secreted by the underlying ectoderm. Magnification: x160 when printed 10cm wide.
