Caption: Egg of a nematode worm, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Other eggs surround the central one. Miniature forms of the adult worm will hatch from these eggs. Nematode worms are a widespread group of animals. Many species are parasitic and live in humans and other animals, sometimes being transmitted in egg or larval form through faeces or insect bites. Some nematode worms can produce hundreds of thousands of eggs each day. Diseases caused by nematode worms include river blindness and elephantiasis (lymphatic filariasis). Nematode worms also cause a wide range of plant diseases. Magnification: x330 when printed 10cm wide
