Caption: Nematode worm. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the mid-region of the body of a female round unsegmented worm (Ascaris lumbricoides). The wall of the body consists of an outer cuticle of protein, underneath which is a layer of muscle cells. The hollow, flattened tube in the middle is the intestine. The large circles are parts of the uterus filled with eggs. The smaller circles are parts of the ovaries (dark pink) and oviducts (some filled with eggs). Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
