Caption: Krill. View of several euphausid krill (Euphausia sp.). Euphausids are small, shrimp-like creatures. The majority of the euphausids are oceanic, living in large shoals of hundreds of millions of individuals. Different species seem to be very specific to a certain temperature and salinity. Krill are a major food species for a wide array of oceanic creatures, ranging from small fish such as sardines and herring to the largest animals alive, blue whales, which strain them from the water by their thousands. These are North Atlantic krill.
