Caption: Edible crab (Cancer pagurus) in kelp (green, order Laminariales). This is the largest European crab, its shell reaching widths of up to 25 centimetres. It also possesses large, black-tipped pincers. The edible crab is found along the north-eastern Atlantic coasts, amongst rocks or on muddy sand near to the shore, to depths of around 100 metres. It feeds on molluscs and other invertebrates, often digging to find buried prey. As its name suggests, this crab is considered to be a delicacy in many parts of Europe. Photographed near St Abbs, Scotland.
