Caption: Harlequin mantis shrimp (Odontodactylus scyllarus) at the entrance to its burrow. Also known as the clown mantis shrimp, it grows up to 18 centimetres long. It feeds at night on other crustaceans, molluscs and small fish. It catches its prey with modified claws (red, lower centre) that it uses as clubs. These are powerful enough to crush a human thumb. Photographed off Sipadan, Malaysia.
