Caption: Giant isopod (Bathynomus giganteus) on gravel. This marine relative of the woodlouse grows up to 46 centimetres in length. Its body is made up of calcified segments, each of which has a pair of legs (appendages). It is a pelagic (mid-water) species and has been found at depths of up to 1000 metres. It captures live prey, for example fish, shrimp and worms. It occurs in the Antilles and the Gulf of Mexico.
