Caption: Giant isopod (Bathynomus giganteus). Macrophotograph of the head of a giant marine isopod. It is related to the woodlouse and can grow up to 46 centimetres in length. Each calcified body segment has a pair of muscular grasping legs (bottom), which it uses to capture large mobile prey in mid-water. The head has complex mouthparts and large compound eyes (black) situated at the base of the antennae. It has been found at depths of up to 1000 metres in the Antilles and the Gulf of Mexico.
