Caption: Emperor shrimp (Periclimenes imperator, centre) riding a Spanish dancer sea slug, or nudibranch (Hexabranchus sanguineus). This shrimp is known for hitching rides on various other animals. It does this to afford itself protection from predators. It chooses animals that are either toxic (such as sea slugs) or tough to eat (such as sea cucumbers). Its host derives little or no benefit from its actions, but is not harmed. This kind of relationship is known as commensalism, a form of symbiosis.
