Caption: Female copepod with eggs. Light micrograph of a freshwater crustacean Cyclops sp. (Copepoda), a tiny planktonic animal. This female carries two full sacs of eggs, one sac on either side of her abdomen. Long antennae (at left) assist in floata- tion in the water; copepods swim with hopping movements of their rowing legs visible here above the body. The tail is at far right. Whereas most "floaters" in plankton obtain at least part of their food by filtering the water, Cyclops mainly eat the decaying remains of plants and animals. In turn they are eaten, and, due to their large numbers, play an important role in the aquatic food chain. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size.
