Caption: Cyclops crustacean larva. Light micrograph of a cyclops (Cyclops sp.) nauplius larva. A nauplius is the first larval stage of a crustacean in which the thorax and abdomen have not developed yet. Nauplii larvae do not feed, but use internal yolk reserves from the egg for energy. Cyclops is one of the most common genera of freshwater copepods, a group of small crustaceans, and is a component of plankton. Individuals may range from 0.5-5 millimetres long. The name comes from the Greek word meaning one eye which may be either red or black in cyclops.
