Credit: DR JEREMY BURGESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of the small compound eye of a silverfish Lepisma saccharina, a primitive wingless insect of the order Thysanura. The body of the silverfish is covered in scales like the ones visible at the bottom of this image. Silverfish are nocturnal insects. They live in damp places since their skin offers little protection from drying out. They are particularly fond of kitchens where they feed on groceries, paper & glue. Magnification: X 720 at 10x8 inch, X103 at 35mm size.
